Southern Rock à la The Georgia
Satellites and Dan Baird, etc.
It was a cold dark winter in Helsinki, Finland in 2012 when three quarters of the bunch which is now called The Helsinki Satellites were trying to make decisions about which songs to play in their future cover band. It was going to be a a rock band with cool vocals, twangy and edgy guitars and the best tunes. Ideas were flying and everything looked good except that for some reason guys couldn't agree on the tunes which to play. There seemed to be always something that didn't please all the members of the group.
The struggle continued for a while until one of them suggested that "Why don't we play tunes by the man we all dig? Dan Baird!! Why the hell didn't we think about that earlier..." Everyone agreed that it was a great idea and instantly they came up with the name...The Helsinki Satellites. A tribute to The Georgia Satellites, Dan's first succesfull band. Choosing their favorite songs played by the Georgia Satellites along with Dan's solo material and tunes from Homemade Sin and The Yayhoos they came with a list of songs now having a hard time to choose from which ones to start. Life is a struggle...
After some try outs the line up: "Dan" Hynde-lead vocals & guitar, "Warner. E." Kääpä-guitar & vocals, Lare "Magellan"-drums & vocals and Vellu "Christopher"-bass & vocals was finalized and rehearsals begun. They guys couldn't wait to get in front of the audience to play these absolutely fantastic tunes.
Surprisingly, well not really (hah!), the feedback was great. "How come no-one's done this before!", "So you finally did it...the Dan band...", "Dude, you sound like Dan!!" and "Georgia Satellites, man they were good. How come I've forgotten them, you guys sound great!" were some of the first comments.
A line up
change took place in January 2013 when Lare decided to leave the
drummers post and he was replaced by "Mauro" Leppänen.
That's a fact unless we are proven wrong!
